More information
In the typical Dutch river landscape, where the rivers Maas and Waal meet, knight Dirc Loef van Horne had his castle built in 1358. As part of the New Dutch Waterline, Loevestein has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. There is plenty to do for young and old in the castle, the outer bailey and the soldiers' village. With its earthen ramparts, double moats, bomb-proof shelter and the street with soldiers' houses, the fortress still exudes the atmosphere of an eighteenth-century soldiers' village.
Loevestein Castle only had a military function and was never inhabited by noble families. However, innkeepers, soldiers and citizens did live there. Visit the permanent exhibition ‘Excavated’ which shows the traces of their lives. Sometimes very special, sometimes surprisingly ordinary. The exhibition ‘Excavated!’ is one of the few archaeological exhibitions in the Netherlands where the exhibition takes place at the discovery site itself.
Visit the Museum with Children
When you visit Loevestein Castle with children, they will not be bored for a moment. They can do whatever they want, there is plenty to do in the castle, the outer bailey and the soldiers' village. Learn about Hugo de Groot, the Middle Ages and the Dutch Waterline. Discover the most special, interesting or surprising stories. Find out how people used to live here, who lived here and what happened within the fortress walls. Let gunpowder explode in the gunpowder tower, shoot muskets, let the cannon pop and flood the fortress with the water game. There are fun workshops and extra activities on a regular basis.
Temporary exhibition: Opposites | Differently connected
Loevestein Castle and the Humanist Association join forces for the exhibition "Opposites | Differently connected’’, about how polarization plays a major role in our history and in our present, but also… how we can change this ourselves with a view to a shared future. An important theme, presented in a light-hearted and accessible way. There is a children's line with fun questions and assignments. Poet and spoken word artist Derek Otte wrote the impressive audio tour "Once upon a time.. én oneens" especially for this exhibition. He tells you (about) the truth, freedom, division, difference and connectedness. Tip: Don't forget to bring your earphones!
Food and drinks
During your visit, you are more than welcome to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with something tasty, apple pie, a delicious sandwich, soup or a traditional ice cream at one of the catering establishments. Within the walls of the castle you will find the Taveerne, a museum café with a lovely terrace under the trees. A little further on is the Remise, a cool location in the ramparts that was built in 1883 as a concrete bomb-proof shelter. Enjoy the spectacular view of the castle at the Remise while the children play on the obstacle course in front of the door.
Nature
Loevestein is located in the floodplains of the Maas and Waal rivers, where nature can take its course. A beautiful river landscape has been created where herds of large grazers roam freely. There is a good chance that you will encounter Konik horses or Red Geuzen on the way to Rijksmuseum Slot Loevestein!
Accessibility
Loevestein has free parking for up to 230 cars. Consult Google Maps for the exact route from your starting point and for current departure and travel times.
